Position Overview:

The Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) is seeking a Level 3 Network Engineer to join its Information Systems Division. This senior-level role will focus on the design, implementation, administration, and security of the agency’s network, unified communications, and related infrastructure. The candidate will work closely with the Network Services Manager, contributing to mission-critical initiatives aligned with ERS's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Network Infrastructure Management

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise-level network systems including:
  • Data center
  • Backbone and edge routing/switching
  • Wireless LAN
  • Cloud and on-premise connectivity
  • Wiring closets and structured cabling
  • Ensure high standards for performance, security, reliability, and scalability

2. Network Security

  • Manage and support enterprise-grade security technologies:
  • Firewalls (e.g., Cisco ASA, Palo Alto)
  • VPNs, NAC, web/email filtering
  • Conduct security reviews and implement best practices to protect network assets

3. Unified Communications

  • Administer and support telecommunications infrastructure including:
  • VoIP systems
  • Videoconferencing platforms
  • Mobile/cellular systems and services

4. Innovation and Evaluation

  • Research and assess emerging technologies for potential adoption
  • Recommend solutions that align with business needs and compliance requirements
  • Contribute to long-term IT planning and architectural decisions

5. Disaster Recovery & Backups

  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing
  • Ensure effective backup strategies for business continuity

6. Documentation & Collaboration

  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of configurations, policies, and procedures
  • Collaborate with IT teams, vendors, and stakeholders to deliver reliable solutions
  • Conduct knowledge transfer and training for team members

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field OR
  • Diploma from a 2-year technical program in networking or computer technology
  • Experience may substitute for education (30 semester hours per year)
  • Experience:
  • 6+ years in enterprise-level network engineering roles
  • 4+ years with Cisco networking equipment
  • 4+ years with network security systems (e.g., firewalls, filters, NAC)
  • 2+ years with wireless networking technologies
  • Proven collaboration and troubleshooting skills
